Film Producer Rodney Rothman (most recently of Get Him to the Greek) is apparently trying to put together a Dog of the South movie starring Bill Hader as Ray Midge. But don’t hold your breath for this one because you will definitely die before you even get to see a trailer.

The source is a site called Collider and you can check it out here.

Is this one of those things where you’re so focused on that project or do you also have some other things in the fire?

Rothman: A few other things in the fire for sure. But that’s the last thing that I wrote and am kind of obsessed over. And so that’s one of my top priorities for next year. But Nick [Stoller] and I are making another movie next year. And there’s a bunch more stuff that I’m writing. But I’m hoping Something is the next one up. I gotta project with Bill Hader and Greg Mottola. We have a project called Dog of the South that I’m really psyched for.

Is it a horror thing?

Rothman: Dog of the South is based on a Charles Portis book. He’s the guy that wrote True Grit. And it’s basically about a guy who’s tracking—his wife runs off with his arch-enemy and he tracks her through the credit card receipts through Mexico and Central America. And that’s something Greg and I are kind of prepping with Hader.

Do you think that could be Greg’s project after Paul?

Rothman: It could be any of those projects in the next couple years, basically. We’re prepping it. We literally don’t know yet who’s going to do what. We just love this book and we love Hader. And Greg and I have been talking about Dog of the South for like five or six years so we optioned it ourselves because Charles Portis is this crazy—not crazy, actually, at all—he’s this awesome writer who lives in Arkansas and sent us a thank you letter from his typewriter. He’s like in his eighties or nineties. Amazing writer. You should really read him. His books are hilarious. Dog of the South, Masters of Atlantis, True Grit—he’s a great writer. And we want to make this madcap road movie about a guy chasing his ex-wife through Central America, basically.

I’m a huge fan of Hader and Mottola.

Rothman: So this is Hader playing like a guy from Arkansas who’s really tightly-wound who kind of drove his wife away and then goes on a quest to get her back but he claims that he’s on a quest to get his car back since she takes his car, which is like a Ford Tornio and it’s his favorite possession.
